Traveling lighter as luggage fees rise.
Save money while losing the burden.
With nearly every airline following suit in adding new luggage fees and rules, there's never been a better time to play "dodge the fees" and lighten your load while winning at the game of traveling lighter.
I've recently returned from a month long adventure in which I traveled throughout many parts of India and easily did my entire trip out of a medium size day pack!   Impossible, some might say?  Actually once all was said and done,  the day pack ended up being just perfect size, even for a international four week journey.  Now of course, on this trip I was headed to India in their summer time so I had no need to pack any bulky or heavy clothing which enabled me to travel extremely light and all that much more enjoyable as well.

When explaining to people about the basics and benefits  of packing and traveling lighter,  I like to make the comparison to anyone going to dinner when your really hungry at a all-you-can-eat buffet.  One in that mind set generally tends to over eat because there are just too many dishes and foods one loves at a buffet.  And as we all know, the eye is always larger than the stomache and we can quickly become overfilled.  The same goes for packing, if we don't watch our weight from the get go, you'll be feeling every extra once every time your on the  move.  So you may want to read on about  some of my tips I use to greatly reduce my travel load and ensure my that entire trip does not become a back breaking experience.

With the ever increasing  fees and extra charges that airlines imposing for everything from seat assignments to first bag luggage charges, every reduction in both size and weight becomes increasingly important.  Some airlines have just rolled out a new ticket fare for people traveling without any luggage beyond a small purse or fanny pack.  So first and foremost , picking the right travel backback or daypack depending on the size and charactoristics that suits you best.  I selected the travel daypack, but maybe you'll want or need to exceed your travel pack size because of a variaty of reasons.   I start by reducing weight first in limiting my toiletries and sundries.  Remembering that TSA rules has placed limits on all liquids, gels and lotions to 4 onces or less.  I've found that the two ounce size containers  seem to work the best for trips lasting three or four weekss long,   If I need a larger amount of any liquid, such as insect repellant which I go through as biting bugs just seem to love feasting on me, so I plan on buying a large spray bottle  once I arrive at my final destination.  When it comes to selecting travel clothing several simple ideas to keep in mind are select light , thin and think in layers.  Thinner clothing can be layered when cooler and removed as the day warms and back on again when evening comes.   Also, thin clothing is easily washed , quickly dries and above all lighter.   Choosing to bring synthetic socks and underware for quicker dry times is always wise, might not be what your used to wearing but greatly reduces both weight and bulk.

With those basics topics covered, now comes the bulk of cutting down  your burden and packing light.  Remember the month trip to India out of a day pack?  Even packing that small and light, upon returning home I realized that I had not even used or needed about 40% of the weight that I had dragged over 1500 kilometers crossing India.  So how small and light you pack is up to you, just keeping in mind you are the one who must bare the burden on your back.   So take only what you absolutely must, not a thing more.  Keeping in mind that you'll can wash or have washed your clothing everyother day, keeping the need to bring extra clothing at a bare minimum.  I find buying some of my tee shirts and other clothing while I travel is more rewarding then bringing them from home.   One might simplify for instance bring one mini facial bar of soap using it also for shampoo and even laundry soap instead of bringing three or four different forms of soaps.
Again, this suggestion might feel outside of your comfort zone but remember your trip will be here and gone quickly,  after which time you can return home to all the amennities available to you.  Pack early to see what your load and pack will look and feel like.  This will give you the time needed to adjust and get a true feel of what your about to carry for the duration of your travels.  If you really want to do a real test run of your travel pack, the best way it to take your fully loaded bag and spend an entire day bringing your pack  on all your errans bringing it everywhere (as if your ever going to leave your pack at anytime while traveling abroad) to completely realize just what it will truely feel like while on the road.  I hope I have helped some of you out there get a better grasp on what and why we might want to travel lighter at the same time reducing your stress and load as well.

Best of destinations to all and may God bless you and your travels.
